We analysed 37 000 eCommerce websites in South Africa, focussing on stores running the two most popular platforms, WooCommerce (on Wordpress) and Shopify, which together account for 95% of the market.
The source data for the usage data on these two technologies cost R5000 from builtwith.com, if we had wanted to include the rest of the 5% technologies such as Drupal, BigCommerce, Prestashop, it would have increased the cost to R10 000, so we ignored them.
The source data was quite polluted, reporting 60 000 Woo stores and 30 000 Shopify stores in South Africa, but the list included many ex-stores which had gone dormant, or stores which were 'coming soon'. To clean this up, we ran some tests to analyse the source code, coming up with a clean list of approximately 10 000 live Shopify stores in South Africa and 28 000 live Woo stores.
We then used SEMRush to get a traffic estimate for each store, so we could rank all the stores by actual usage.
Claude Haiku helped to classify every store into its relevant industry sector or niche.
Results.
- WooCommerce is used by 73% of all eCommerce stores in SA, 27% run Shopify.
- 32 000 (75% of stores) get zero traffic, less than 1 user per day.
- Only 5000 stores in South Africa get more than 1000 views per month
- In the Top 50 most trafficked stores, 68% run Shopify, 32% Woo
