A Botanical Treasure in the Heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom

Fernkloof Indigenous Nursery forms part of the remarkable Fernkloof Nature Reserve, which remarkably contains 18% of the Cape Floral Kingdom's plants in just 18 square kilometers (0.002% of the region). The nursery specializes in indigenous fynbos plants adapted to the Mediterranean climate of cold wet winters and hot dry summers.

Managed by the Hermanus Botanical Society, this community project propagates and sells waterwise indigenous plants that thrive in local conditions. The nursery staff are highly knowledgeable about fynbos species and provide expert advice on plant selection and care.

What Makes It Special

  • Endemic Species: Home to many plants found nowhere else on earth, including rare and threatened species
  • Educational Value: Offers insight into the Cape's unique plant biodiversity
  • Conservation Focus: Supports preservation of indigenous flora through plant propagation

Visitor Experience

The nursery complements the broader Fernkloof Nature Reserve experience, which includes:

  • A 60km network of hiking trails suitable for various fitness levels
  • Botanical gardens with informative plant displays
  • A permanent display of seasonal flowers at the Visitors' Centre
  • Shaded picnic areas perfect for family outings

Local Tips

Visit between August and October to see the fynbos at its flowering peak. The annual "Celebration of Fynbos" event during Heritage Weekend (September) showcases the spectacular diversity of local flora. Morning walks are best for spotting wildlife like Grey rhebok, Cape grysbok and various bird species.

Plant enthusiasts should ask about the seasonal specialties - staff can point you to unique specimens currently in bloom. Some plants, like the Thyme buchu (Agathosma serpyllacea), flower from May through December.

Bring your own water and snacks as there are no waste bins in the reserve (part of the "take your rubbish home" conservation ethos).

Conservation Connection

The nursery's work supports the broader efforts of the Millennium Seed Bank Partnership, which collects and preserves seeds from threatened plant species worldwide. By purchasing plants here, visitors directly contribute to local conservation initiatives including alien vegetation removal and path maintenance.
