A Botanical Paradise at Hermanus's Doorstep

Covering 18 square kilometers of the Kleinrivier Mountains, Fernkloof Nature Reserve is a floral wonderland unlike anywhere else on earth. Despite comprising just 0.002% of the Cape Floral Kingdom, it contains an astonishing 18% of its plant species - more than 1,250 documented species packed into this compact preserve.

The reserve features a Mediterranean climate with cold wet winters and hot dry summers with strong south-easterly winds - creating perfect conditions for the diverse fynbos that blankets the landscape.

Trail Network and Accessibility

The reserve offers 60 km of well-maintained trails catering to all fitness levels:

  • Waterfall Trail - A relatively easy and popular route perfect for families
  • Three Dams Trail - A moderate hike with swimming opportunities (the final approach can be rocky)
  • Lemoenkop Trail - Offers spectacular panoramic views of Hermanus and Walker Bay
  • Klipspringer Trail - Features beautiful protea displays when in bloom

For overnight hikers, Galpin Hut provides basic accommodation for those wanting to explore deeper into the reserve.

Wildlife Spotting

Though primarily known for its flora, the reserve hosts Grey rhebok, Cape grysbok, klipspringer, baboon, mongoose and dassie in small numbers. Nocturnal residents like porcupine, genet and hare are rarely seen, and the occasional Cape Mountain leopard might leave tracks for the observant hiker.

Birdwatchers should look out for the distinctive Cape Sugarbird, sunbirds, Rock Thrush and Rock Jumper. Raptors include Jackal Buzzard and Black Eagle.

Local Tips

  • The best months for flowering displays are August through October
  • Visit the Visitors' Centre first to see specimens of what's currently in bloom
  • Early mornings offer the best wildlife sightings and cooler hiking conditions
  • Bring water as summer temperatures can soar between the mountains
  • The Indigenous Nursery sells plants that can be cultivated in home gardens
  • For dog owners, there is a specific pet-friendly route (dogs must be leashed)

The Hermanus Botanical Society maintains a permanent display at the Visitors' Centre showcasing seasonal flowers found in the veld. The Society also runs educational programs and hosts an annual Celebration of Fynbos over the Heritage Day weekend in September.

Entry to the reserve is free (donations welcomed), making it an exceptional value for visitors to the area and a favorite spot for locals seeking exercise, picnics, or a peaceful nature escape.
