Heaven on Earth in the Hemel en Aarde Valley

Tucked away at the foot of the majestic Babylonstoren Mountain about 120km from Cape Town, these cottages offer a perfect escape into nature. The Onrus River flows through the heart of the property, creating a tranquil soundtrack to your stay.

Set in the middle of the renowned Hemel en Aarde Valley (meaning "Heaven and Earth" in Afrikaans), the location puts guests within easy reach of world-class wineries while being just 15 minutes' drive from Hermanus town and its famous whale-watching spots.

The Cottages

Three distinct self-catering cottages cater to different needs:

  • Gatehouse - A versatile option with two separate bedrooms opening onto a deck (not interconnected through the house). Features a deep wood-fired hot tub and mountain views.
  • Olive - A romantic one-bedroom cottage with two small bathrooms and a deck overlooking one of the property's dams. Perfect for couples seeking privacy.
  • Strelitzia - The former milking shed converted into a spacious cottage with a double-volume lounge, stone fireplace, and wrap-around balcony. Accommodates up to 6 people with three bedrooms.

Each cottage features outdoor wood-fired hot tubs (known locally as "kol-kol" tubs) - a distinctive South African experience where you can soak under the stars while enjoying mountain views.

Local Experience

The valley offers more than just accommodation. Wake up to the sounds of frogs, crickets and owls, and spend your days:

  • Wine tasting at nearby estates including Hamilton Russell Vineyards, Bouchard Finlayson, and Creation Wines
  • Dining at excellent local restaurants like Mogg's Country Cookhouse (a local favourite just walking distance away)
  • Enjoying mountain biking on established trails (permit required, available at Wine Village)
  • Hiking through indigenous fynbos with mountain views

For added convenience, pre-order local food platters featuring artisanal cheeses from nearby Stone House Dairy and Klein Rivier farms, along with locally-produced charcuterie. Pair these with wines from the valley for an authentic taste of the region.

Good to Know

Most restaurants in the valley don't open at night (except Hemel en Aarde Brewery), so plan accordingly. The property sources water from its own borehole, and it's perfectly safe to drink. Remember to bring beach towels if heading to Hermanus, and your own HDMI cable if you want to connect devices to the TV screens (there's no DSTV).

The cottages aren't party venues but perfect for those seeking tranquility and reconnection with nature - expect to hear fish eagles calling and see incredible star-filled skies at night.
