A Natural Coastal Treasure Along Walker Bay

The Hermanus Cliff Path Biodiversity Walk stretches for approximately 8km along the spectacular coastline, offering some of the most breathtaking ocean views in the Western Cape. This well-maintained pathway hugs the dramatic cliff edges, allowing visitors to experience the raw beauty of Walker Bay up close.

Wildlife and Natural Features

The path forms part of the Fernkloof nature reserve system and offers exceptional biodiversity spotting opportunities:

  • Marine life: Prime whale watching during season (July-November), with regular dolphin sightings year-round
  • Land animals: Keep an eye out for dassies (rock hyrax) sunning themselves on rocks and the occasional chameleon in the vegetation
  • Bird watching: Oyster catchers and various seabirds frequent the shoreline
  • Fynbos flora: Indigenous coastal vegetation with informative signboards explaining the unique plant species

Practical Information

The path is accessible for most fitness levels, with plenty of benches strategically placed for resting and whale watching. Security guards patrol the route from 7am to 7pm daily, ensuring visitors feel safe.

Local tip: The western end of the path is typically less crowded. Consider parking there (it's free) and walking eastward for a more peaceful experience. Early mornings offer the best light for photography and cooler temperatures for walking.

Routes and Access Points

The complete path runs from the New Harbour all the way to Grotto Beach, but visitors can join or exit at multiple points. Most sections are wheelchair-friendly, though some areas between New Harbour and Ficks Pool may be challenging.

For the best experience, allow about 2 hours for a one-way journey, then either return the same way or arrange transport back to your starting point.

Additional Features

  • Natural tidal pools for swimming in protected areas
  • Ficks, a popular seaside restaurant perfect for sundowners after your walk
  • The path connects to the Old Harbour area, where you can treat yourself to ice cream after completing your walk

No entrance fee is required—this spectacular natural attraction is freely available to all visitors, making it one of the best value experiences in the area.
