whale watching scenic coastal views cliff path natural lookout benches

Premier Whale Watching at Sievers Point

Sievers Point stands as one of the finest land-based whale watching locations along the Hermanus coastline. Situated along the scenic Cliff Path, this vantage point offers unimpeded views across Walker Bay, where Southern Right whales come remarkably close to shore during season (June to November).

Whale Watching Excellence

The unique geography of Sievers Point creates ideal whale watching conditions. The deep waters immediately off the cliffs allow whales to approach within meters of shore, particularly in the area to the left of the point which serves as a favored calving and resting spot. During peak season (September-October), visitors regularly report seeing multiple whales simultaneously, with mothers and calves often visible.

Insider tip: Bring binoculars to enhance your viewing experience, especially when whales are further out in the bay. A zoom lens camera is also valuable for capturing memorable shots.

Visitor Experience

  • Several viewing benches positioned at strategic points
  • Concrete steps and footpaths built into the rocks for easier navigation
  • Small parking area (arrives early during whale season as spaces fill quickly)
  • Less crowded than the main town lookout points
  • Access to the Cliff Path for extended coastal walking

Beyond whale watching, Sievers Point offers beautiful rock formations, crashing waves, and opportunities to spot dolphins and seals. The rugged natural setting remains largely undeveloped, with minimal tourist infrastructure beyond the pathway.

Historical Note

The steps and footpaths on the rocks were originally constructed years ago to help local fishermen access prime fishing spots. Look closely and you might spot the builder's initials carved into some of the steps - a small piece of local heritage.

For a complete Hermanus experience, combine your visit with a leisurely walk along other sections of the Cliff Path, which extends nearly 10 kilometers along the coastline. The path offers multiple viewing points and diverse coastal scenery.
