A 73km Journey Through the Overberg's Natural Splendour
The Hermanus Camino offers a 5-day, 5-night slackpacking adventure across the diverse landscapes of the Overberg region. This 73km route takes hikers through mountain and coastal fynbos, renosterveld, vineyards, orchards, farmland, and along pristine beaches, providing an immersive experience of the Western Cape's natural beauty.
What Makes This Trail Special
- Diverse terrain: Each day presents new landscapes - from the Hemel en Aarde Valley ("Heaven and Earth") to the magnificent peaks above Klein River lagoon, culminating in Walker Bay's pristine beaches and Hermanus's iconic cliff path
- Rich biodiversity: The Overberg hosts over 60 endemic bird species, with the opportunity to spot Cape Sugarbirds, Blue Cranes, and Black Harriers amongst the spectacular fynbos
- Cultural experiences: Wine tastings at local vineyards, traditional South African braais, and a river cruise along the Klein River in Stanford
- Expert guides: Knowledgeable locals share insights about the region's flora, fauna, and history throughout the journey
Practical Information
The Camino runs three times weekly (starting Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday) except during school holiday periods in July and December. Groups are limited to 12 people, making for an intimate experience. The price includes all meals, accommodation, guides, transport of luggage, selected drinks, and extra experiences like wine tastings.
While predominantly a walk rather than a technical hike, moderate fitness is required. Day 3 includes some challenging inclines but nothing extreme. Most participants are in their 60s and 70s, with the trail suitable for ages 10-75.
Local Tips
- Ideal timing: While the Camino operates year-round (except during rainy season in late June/July), each season offers unique highlights - summer for swimming opportunities, winter for spectacular fynbos displays, and August to November for whale watching
- Accommodation highlights: Stays include beautiful stone cottages at Glen Oakes farm, hot tubs at Otium Oasis, and a night at Wortelgat retreat surrounded by ancient Milkwood forests
- Natural treasures: The region showcases some remarkable Asteraceae (daisy family) specimens and walking routes through some of the least-visited fynbos areas in the Western Cape
- Lekker extras: The traditional South African braai experiences and sundowner cruise are particular highlights that showcase local culture
For those wanting to extend their stay, the organisers have negotiated special rates at the Windsor Hotel in Hermanus - a perfect opportunity to explore the town after completing the Camino.
