Amakhala - Carnarvon Dale

Carnarvon Dale is an 1857 family farm situated in Frontier Country, on the banks of the Bushman's River. The historic Settler farmhouse once provided lodgings for travelers whose journeys had been halted by the flooded river, until it was safe for them to cross. It maintains the same tradition of hospitality, welcoming guests into the home and inviting them to share the heritage.

Travelers once recorded that the open plains were home to mighty elephants and fearsome lions, and that the valley bushveld teemed with various species of game. As guests return to nature, nature will return to them all that is good. They are invited to share in the conservation experience.

Carnarvon Dale consists of the Settler farmhouse, the Bottom House, and an elegantly restored early Edwardian cottage, the Top House. It offers a choice of en-suite serviced bedrooms with private lounges meeting three-star grading requirements. A family suite is available upon request.

Delicious farm-style meals are served in the main dining room. Morning and late afternoon guided game drives in an open Land Rover are arranged to suit guests' personal needs. For a change of pace, bird watching and game spotting walks along the lazy Bushman's River are available.

In the evenings, guests can make new friends over cool sundowners and enjoy stories of bygone days around a 'braaivleis' fire under South African stars. The hosts, Roger and Maryan Hart, aim to make guests' stays memorable and enjoyable by introducing them to the rich heritage of this unique landscape and its history, while offering warm hospitality that defines the Eastern Cape.

Carnarvon Dale traverses both Amakhala Game Reserve (their own reserve) and Shamwari Game Reserve (by private arrangement for guests staying two or more nights), totaling 32,000 hectares of Big Five and other game viewing. Children aged 9 and above are welcome, with adjoining bedrooms and the option to leave doors open for easy communication. Large, comfortable double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms lead to shared lounges and covered verandas.
