Bellevue Forest Reserve is a private game reserve nestled in the malaria-free Eastern Cape region of South Africa, approximately 80 kilometers from Port Elizabeth. The reserve, owned by the Buchner family, represents their commitment to ecological restoration of natural wildscapes and wildlife corridors.
The 2,500-hectare property evolved from an old railway village and farmland into a thriving wildlife sanctuary. It is home to the Big 5 (lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalos, and leopards) and hosts 165 bird species among other wildlife. The reserve places special emphasis on preserving endangered flora and fauna, including the flightless dung beetle.
The property features two distinct accommodation options. Elephants Lodge, crowned atop a ridge amongst indigenous Milkwood Trees, overlooks the valley and offers luxurious accommodation suitable for families with children. The StarGazer Camp provides a unique outdoor experience where guests can sleep under the stars in a romantic setting illuminated by hanging lanterns.
The reserve offers various activities including giraffe tracking safaris, wildlife Big 5 safaris, scenic helicopter flights, buffalo encounters, and stargazing experiences. Additional offerings include beauty treatments at the nearby Addo Indlovu Spa and forest bathing in one of the purest virgin forests on the planet.
Through their Foundation, Bellevue Forest Reserve maintains a strong commitment to community beneficiation, funding sustainable educational, community, and environmental projects in the Eastern Cape. The reserve is also positioned for expansion through conservation partnerships, with plans to reintroduce more species such as elephants and rhinos to the area.
