Big Sky Ranch, a historic thoroughbred racehorse farm with over 135 years of heritage, has a rich history dating back to 1883 when it was established by the Ellis family. The farm has been instrumental in breeding numerous champions and creating stud book dynasties, including notable horses such as Prestisimo, Hey Presto, Magic Charm, and many others. In 1974, the property was acquired by Gary Player and became known as the Gary Player Horse Stud, where his winning philosophy led to the breeding of exceptional horses like Creator, My Advantage, and Amajuba.
Situated near Colesberg, the farm has earned recognition in both South African and international thoroughbred markets due to its exceptional breeding stock. Under the recent leadership of Greg Morris, the property has undergone significant modernization of its facilities and infrastructure. The operation has diversified to include an Nguni Stud and cattle operations, with the introduction of cattle playing a vital role in the farm's veld restoration program.
While thoroughbred racehorse breeding remains central to the operation, albeit on a reduced scale, the farm's location in the Karoo landscape provides ideal conditions for breeding. The natural veld is rich in trace elements and calcium content, contributing to the development of strong-boned and resilient animals. The region's extreme climate offers additional advantages for horse breeding, with cold temperatures naturally controlling parasites and warm conditions promoting proper growth and development.
