Big Sky Ranch, previously known as the Gary Player Horse Stud, is a historic thoroughbred racehorse farm with over 135 years of heritage. It was established by the Ellis family in 1883 and has bred numerous champions, leaving a lasting impact on the horse racing industry. In 1974, Gary Player took over the farm, bringing his winning philosophy and personal involvement to the stud, resulting in the breeding of exceptional horses such as Creator, My Advantage, Amajuba, Kadarko, and many more.

Located near Colesberg, the farm has attracted discerning buyers from both South Africa and the international thoroughbred market due to its exceptional breeding stock, reflecting the remarkable legacy of the Ellis family and Gary Player. In recent years, Big Sky Ranch has undergone a significant transformation under the guidance of Greg Morris, with modernized facilities, revitalized farmlands, and the introduction of a Nguni Stud and cattle operations.

Despite the diversification, thoroughbred racehorse breeding remains at the heart of the operation, albeit on a smaller scale. The farm's location in the Karoo landscape provides an ideal environment for breeding racehorses, with the veld's high levels of trace elements and calcium contributing to the growth of strong-boned and resilient animals. The extreme climate, with cold temperatures naturally controlling parasites and warmth promoting proper growth and development, is advantageous for breeding racehorses.
