Bivane Dam, completed in 2000, is situated in Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Built on the Bivane River, a tributary of the Phongolo, it was developed by the Impala Water Users Association to provide sustainable water supply for local irrigation schemes.
The dam is surrounded by stunning quartzite and banded ironstone hills, riverine forest, and steep cliffs, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts. The location offers approximately 13 kilometers of hiking trails and 38 kilometers of roads and tracks suitable for mountain biking, quad biking, and 4x4 activities.
Water activities are a major attraction, with the dam being popular for boating and bass fishing. Visitors can catch various fish species including fresh water Mackerel, Bass, Yellow fish, Tilapia, Carp, and Barbel. The turbulent waters below the dam wall provide excellent conditions for canoeing and river rafting. Paddle boats and inflatable canoes are available for recreational use.
The facility offers various accommodation options including 2, 5, and 6 sleeper chalets, each equipped with kitchenette and en-suite bathroom facilities. The chalets feature both living area and loft sleeping arrangements, except for the 2-sleeper units where beds are located in the loft only. Camping facilities are also available.
Additional amenities include a 9-hole mini golf course with scenic dam views and a venue hall that can accommodate 90 people, complete with a fully equipped kitchen and stretch tent for events. The venue is particularly popular for weddings and functions. The dam has transitioned to a season ticket system for access, replacing day visits.
During the COVID pandemic, the facility has remained operational with implementation of social distancing measures and mask requirements in common areas.
