Camissa Farm is nestled in the Banhoek valley between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek in South Africa's Western Cape. Its name, meaning "place of sweet water" in the Khoi language, reflects its pristine mountain setting. Despite its secluded atmosphere, the property is conveniently located just eight minutes from Stellenbosch, offering spectacular views of the valley and the Simonsberg mountains.
The 60-hectare farm operates on sustainable principles, featuring diverse mixed orchards that include olives, almonds, lemons, rosemary, garlic, rose-geranium, avocados, walnuts, macadamia nuts, and asparagus. This intentional biodiversity helps reduce pest issues naturally. The property also maintains a growing herd of grass-fed Dexter cattle that graze between vineyard rows. Following significant alien vegetation clearing four years ago, the owners have planted thousands of indigenous and fruit-bearing trees, with plans to restore much of the land to natural parkland.
The accommodation offerings include six private eco-cabins: Agama Cabin, Almond Cottage, Rosemary Cottage, Avocado Cottage, Camissa Cottage, and the unique "Bed in the Shed." Each property offers distinct characteristics and views, with amenities such as hot tubs, access to hiking trails, and wild swimming opportunities. The accommodations are integrated into the natural landscape, providing guests with immersive experiences in the surrounding environment.
The farm boasts rich wildlife, including nocturnal visitors such as leopards, porcupines, various buck species, and mongoose. During daylight hours, agama lizards can be spotted sunbathing on the rocky outcrops, while jackal buzzards patrol the skies. The nighttime chorus includes the calls of nightjars and stream frogs, occasionally punctuated by gatherings of vocal toads. The property is connected to an extensive network of mountain biking and hiking trails within the Banhoek Conservancy, offering guests numerous recreational opportunities in this pristine natural setting.
