Cumberland Nature Reserve is a 560-hectare private sanctuary located east of Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. The reserve encompasses diverse habitats including pristine savanna, woodland, valley thickets, and wetland. Its landscape features extensive cliff faces, deep valleys, waterfalls, and well-wooded gorges, providing exceptional photography opportunities.
The reserve boasts remarkable biodiversity, hosting over 300 bird species, 50 butterfly species, 200 wild-flower species, and 30 mammal species. It maintains a healthy snake population, including resident African Rock Pythons, and features an abundance of indigenous trees and grasses. The Rietspruit Stream flowing through the property attracts numerous dragonflies, frogs, and other water-loving creatures, while the Umgeni River, forming part of the reserve's boundary, is home to various freshwater fish and resident crocodiles.
The accommodation offerings include several distinct options. Zebra Cottage, a converted farm garage, sleeps four guests and features modern amenities with a private deck overlooking the Umgeni River. Kranz Hut offers a unique two-person stay with spectacular gorge views and eco-friendly facilities. Horseshoe Cottage, situated on the Umgeni River banks, accommodates four guests in an open-plan setting. The historical Impala and Kudu Rooms provide rustic charm with modern comforts, sleeping two and six people respectively.
For camping enthusiasts, the reserve offers three distinct experiences: Rietspruit Campsite, accommodating up to 15 people beside the stream; Uzavolo Campsite, a bush escape for up to 8 people; and Saligna Wild Campsite, an authentic wilderness experience requiring high-clearance vehicles. All campsites offer exclusive use to ensure privacy.
The reserve caters to various outdoor activities, including walking, birding, and mountain biking, though it's not open to day visitors. Swimming pool access is exclusive to Zebra Cottage and Impala and Kudu Room guests.
