Dwarsvlei Guest House is a historic Karoo farm property located just outside Middelburg on the N9 in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Originally established in the mid-19th century, this enchanting former horse stud farm has been transformed into a sheep farming operation while maintaining its colonial heritage and charm.
The property features an impressive British homestead with characteristic high ceilings and period architecture. Set within a secluded poplar forest, the guest house is surrounded by an exquisite garden that provides a peaceful retreat from urban life. The original homestead, which still stands adjacent to the current building, retains some of its authentic reed ceilings and holds historical significance. An ancient wagon track, believed to be the earliest road from Graaff Reinet, passes through the vlei (wetland) area, where a rock bearing carved names marks a former outspan point used by travelers.
The accommodation includes thoughtfully appointed guest rooms, with one particular room offering a double bed and additional single beds as needed, providing views over the front garden and pool area. The facility features shared bathroom amenities, with an upstairs bathroom containing a toilet and bath, and a downstairs shower. The property has recently upgraded its camping and function facilities, making it a versatile destination for various types of stays and events.
