Fels Retreat is situated in the heart of northern KwaZulu-Natal, just outside Paulpietersburg, at the foot of the Dumbe Mountain, which is the tail-end of the magnificent Drakensberg mountain range. It was originally a Catholic Mission with a monastery, chapel and other outside buildings, and its transformation into a venue for various occasions began in 2000.

With a spectacular view over tree plantations and of mountain ranges on the horizon, this retreat serves as a perfect countryside bed and breakfast and wedding or event venue. It also specializes in corporate, social or spiritual retreats. Fels Retreat can accommodate approximately 34 guests in various rooms including Superior Rooms, Double Rooms, Standard Rooms, Dorms, and Self-catering Units. Camping sites are also available with hot showers and a boma with a fire pit.

The on-site chapel can seat 150 guests, and it features a pipe organ and a bell that adds to a special atmosphere. The rustic-looking, round, thatched-roof lapa can seat 150 guests, while for conferences, about 60 participants can be seated at tables. A large bar counter, fridge and freezer are available. Fels Retreat is a pet-friendly establishment, but this requires prior arrangement.

The superior rooms each contain a double bed, an en-suite bathroom, a TV, fridge, heater, and tea and coffee-making facilities.
