Frontier River Resort is a luxury tented establishment situated on a hillside overlooking the Orange River and Namibia, approximately 5km from the Vioolsdrift border post on the N7. Strategically positioned halfway between Cape Town and Windhoek, the resort serves as an ideal stopover for travelers and tourists exploring the Richtersveld region.
The resort features 13 tented chalets, including luxury double/twin tents and family units, with a total capacity of 30 guests. Each accommodation option comes equipped with en-suite bathrooms constructed from local stone, air conditioning, and bar fridges. The newest additions include seven superior tents featuring modern amenities and eco-friendly solar-powered lighting systems.
For dining, guests can choose between self-catering facilities at the communal tented boma kitchen, which includes built-in braai facilities, or enjoy freshly prepared meals at the Farmhouse Kitchen. The resort boasts what is claimed to be the highest bar in Vioolsdrift, offering 180-degree views of the Namibian mountains and Orange River, alongside a refreshing swimming pool.
The location provides excellent access to the Orange River (also known as the Gariep River by local Nama people), one of South Africa's major waterways and a premier adventure destination. Visitors can engage in activities such as paddling, swimming, bird watching, and navigating rapids with professional guides. The river, which runs through the Richtersveldt Desert Reserve, is now part of the Transfrontier transformation parks, offering unique opportunities to explore the desert ecosystem.
The resort has garnered positive guest reviews, particularly noting the welcoming atmosphere created by owners Dirk and Stephnie, the quality of meals, and the overall comfort of the accommodations. Additional amenities include free WiFi, secured parking, picnic areas, and BBQ facilities, making it a comprehensive destination for both short stays and extended visits.
