Grootfontein Farm House

Grootfontein Farm House is an isolated Victorian farmhouse situated approximately 7.6 kilometers from the N1 highway and 12 kilometers south of Beaufort-West, bordering the Karoo National Park. The main house features two bedrooms, one with a king-sized bed and the other with two single beds, as well as two bathrooms, one with a shower and the other with a bath and shower combination.

The farmhouse includes a large kitchen equipped with an oven, refrigerator, and ample utensils, crockery, and pots. The living area has a built-in braai and leads onto a covered back veranda with a table and chairs. The front veranda is also covered and provides access to the swimming pool. Adjacent to the main house is an annex consisting of a large room with a king-sized bed and a cot, an en-suite bathroom, and a kitchenette.

Established around 1850, the farm's name aptly describes its proximity to a large natural spring. Historically, the spring fed the abundant orchards and wheat fields that once flourished on the plains in front of the homestead. While the carefully constructed furrow still channels water past the house, a short walk leads to the origin of the spring and an impressive stone wall built to create a large dam where previous owners enjoyed skiing.

The farmhouse offers opportunities for walking, mountain biking, and exploring the veld where several scarce plant species thrive. Visitors are encouraged to bring binoculars for bird watching or to simply light a fire outside and enjoy the brilliant night sky. Amenities include books to read, board games to play, and two lovely verandas on which to relax and soak up the peace and quiet.

The farm borders the Karoo National Park and is located five hours' drive from Cape Town, between Leeu Gamka and Beaufort West. Maps are available.
