High Goon Vrea

Hogsback, Eastern Cape

High Goonvrea on Hogsback is a beautiful 20-acre property located on Tor Doone lane. It offers three self-catering units: The Cottage, the Woodland Cabin, and the Garden Flat. The property is located in the lee of Tor Doone and is set in beautiful wooded gardens.

During the Spring Festival, many of the beautiful private woodland gardens in the area are open to the public, creating a cacophony of colors in Hogsback. It is said that J.R.R. Tolkien was inspired to write The Hobbit here, and one can imagine how Hogsback evoked the feeling of Middle Earth for him.

The Cottage is a spacious and charming thatched dwelling, originally built by an Italian prisoner of war. It features a sitting room/dining area with an open fireplace, a separate kitchen with appliances, and two large bedrooms with queen-sized beds and electric blankets. One bedroom has an additional single bed. The bathroom has both a bathtub and a shower.

The Woodland Cottage is a small and secluded hideaway with a view of its own large private woodland garden. It consists of a sitting/kitchen area with a wood burner, a bedroom with a queen-sized bed, and an inter-leading bathroom with a shower, basin, and toilet. It also has a covered patio with a table, chairs, and a Weber braai.

The Garden Flat consists of a bedroom/sitting area with a queen-sized bed, a separate kitchen, and a bathroom. It has access to a wooded lawn.

Hogsback is situated high in the Amatola mountains of the Eastern Cape. As visitors climb up the mountain pass and leave the Karoo behind, they enter a different micro-climate and another world. Hogsback is rich in natural beauty and has fascinating places to visit.
