Hillside Farm, established in 1909, is a working farm located in the southern Free State province of South Africa. The property has been managed by the same family for four generations, currently overseen by Ian and Kate McLachlan along with their three sons and farm manager Nico Nel. The farm is ideally situated near the N1 between Trompsburg and Springfontein, making it a perfect stopover point for travelers, particularly those journeying between Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KZN, and the Eastern or Western Cape.
The accommodation consists of three distinct units, each offering unique characteristics and experiences. Len's Cottage, overlooking a rose garden and nestled in a shaded corner, is particularly suitable for couples or honeymooners, accommodating up to four guests. The Tree House, a three-bedroom family apartment with en-suite bathrooms, features folding doors that open to garden views and the African night sky, accommodating up to six guests. Garden View, situated in the upper level of the original farmhouse, offers generous space with expansive north-facing windows and wooden finishes, accommodating up to four guests with a shared bathroom.
The farm provides a continental breakfast sourced from local farm produce, and home-cooked meals are available. Guests can engage in various outdoor activities including tennis, cycling, swimming in either the pool or farm dam, and stargazing. The property is set behind a koppie in beautiful gardens, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the renowned Free State countryside, spectacular sunsets, and expansive skies. The establishment maintains a strong commitment to community welfare and environmental stewardship, continuing a legacy of dedication to the land and its people that spans over a century.
