Kalanderkloof Cottage is an award-winning, secluded retreat nestled in South Africa's Garden Route between Knysna and Sedgefield. Set on a 108-hectare farm surrounded by fynbos fields, forest, and the Karatara River, this architecturally remodeled cottage offers a unique off-the-grid experience while maintaining luxury amenities.
The cottage features a contemporary design with modern finishes, comprising an open-plan lounge, dining, and kitchen area. The bedroom includes a double bed, while the lounge offers a sleeper couch suitable for two children. The fully-equipped kitchen operates on gas power, featuring a fridge with freezer compartment, stove, oven, and double basins. Both the bedroom and lounge open onto a wooden deck through glass sliding doors, perfect for sunbathing or enjoying sundowners.
The property operates entirely on sustainable systems, utilizing solar power for electronics and lighting, and harvested rainwater filtered for drinking, cooking, and washing. A septic tank/french drain combination manages wastewater. Despite being off-grid, the cottage maintains modern comforts while encouraging a digital detox, with no television or sound system provided.
Guests can enjoy various activities, including forest walks, river picnics, and exploring the Soutkloof area. The property survived the 2017 Knysna fires and now features new honeybush tea fields. A glass studio is under construction, which will host future retreats and creative workshops. The cottage is particularly popular for honeymoons, anniversaries, and special celebrations, offering a perfect blend of seclusion and comfort in nature.
