Karoo Gariep Tented Camp offers a rustic camping experience within the KhoiSan Karoo Conservancy, an 8,000-hectare property located between Colesberg and Hanover, 8 km off the N1 highway. The camp is strategically positioned as a halfway point between major South African destinations including Cape Town, Johannesburg, Upington, and the Garden Route.
The tented accommodation provides comfortable lodging for four guests, featuring two compartments: one with a double bed and another with two single beds. The fully-furnished tent includes floor carpeting, power points, and provided linens and towels. Ablution facilities, comprising a shower, toilet, and basin, are situated 30 meters from the tent within the New Holme Guest House garden, offering privacy from the main lodge area.
Guests can participate in various activities including early morning birding drives, walks, horse riding, and stargazing from a dedicated star deck. The camp's location enables wildlife viewing opportunities, particularly nocturnal animals such as aardwolves, Cape foxes, bat-eared foxes, African wildcats, aardvarks, porcupines, and various weasel species. A highlight is the guided hippo drive, conducted at 5 PM in winter and 6 PM in summer, where guests can observe the only hippos in the Karoo while enjoying sundowners.
The KhoiSan Karoo Conservancy features three lodges, a log cabin, and the tented camp. New Holme and Mieliefontein are 4-star establishments, while Wolmade and Stoffels Rus offer self-catering options. The area serves as an excellent base for exploring the central Karoo, including the Seekooi Valley Meander connecting New Bethesda to Hanover and Colesberg. Additional attractions include visits to Orania, the Van Der Kloof Dam, and local suricate colonies. A minimum stay of 2-3 nights is recommended for a complete Karoo experience.
