Kunene River Lodge is situated on the banks of the Kunene River, marking the northwestern border between Angola and Namibia. The property features a shaded environment created by indigenous trees that shelter both chalets and campsites, complemented by a swimming pool set on a sunny lawn. A deck extending over the river from the bar and restaurant provides spectacular riverside dining and drinking experiences.
The lodge's history began as a simple rest camp along the 4x4 trail from Epupa to Ruacana. In 2005, Pete and Hillary Morgan acquired and transformed the property into a premier tourist destination, particularly known for its white-water rafting activities at the nearby Ondorusu Gorge. The establishment offers various activities including bird cruises featuring rare endemic species, cultural visits to the Himba people, and scenic sundowner cruises.
As a gateway to the Kaokoland region, the lodge attracts 4x4 enthusiasts who tackle the challenging river road to Epupa Falls. The property has gained recognition among birding enthusiasts, offering sightings of various species including the rare Cinderella Waxbill, which is unique to this stretch of the Kunene River.
Through collaboration with the local conservancy and the World Wildlife Fund, the area has been enriched with reintroduced mammals. Visitors may encounter kudu, zebra, black-faced impala, and giraffe in the surrounding region. The campsite facilities include power points, water access, and braai (BBQ) areas, with separate male and female ablution blocks featuring modern amenities. Various camping options accommodate different group sizes, all positioned to overlook the river under shaded areas.
Post COVID-19, the lodge has implemented preventive measures and offers special rates for Namibian and SADC nationals as part of their regional tourism initiative.
