Kwandwe Private Game Reserve is one of the largest private game reserves in South Africa's Eastern Cape. It is owner-run and managed, with a strong emphasis on conservation and community development. The reserve spans 22,000 hectares of pristine wilderness and extends along 30 km of privately-owned Great Fish River frontage.
The name "Kwandwe" means "Place of the Blue Crane" in Xhosa. The reserve is home to a variety of wildlife species, including the Big 5: lion, black and white rhino, elephant, buffalo, and leopard. It also provides a habitat for protected bird species such as the Blue Crane and Martial Eagle, delighting birdwatchers.
Guests at Kwandwe can participate in day and night game drives, walking safaris with experienced trackers, and sleep-outs on specially designed platforms. The reserve offers specialized activities like rhino darting, carnivore research, and fixed-wing flights following the route taken by early settlers. Kwandwe's reception building is a Frontier War-era fortified homestead, and the reserve has its own intimate chapel.
Kwandwe features three beautiful, intimate safari lodges and a private villa that offer world-class sophistication and style. As a member of the renowned Relais & Chateaux association, Kwandwe is located in a malaria-free area and is ideal for families, forming a natural conclusion to a journey along the world-famous Garden Route.
