Lake Heron Game and Trout Farm is a tranquil retreat located in the Elandskloof Valley, 19 kilometers from Dullstroom in Mpumalanga, South Africa. Situated just 2.5 hours east of Johannesburg in the "province of the rising sun," the property offers a perfect escape for fishing enthusiasts, couples seeking romance, and families looking for a peaceful getaway.
The establishment features three separate cottages, each equipped with king-size beds, single beds, open log fireplaces, baths, and private entrances. All accommodations offer scenic views of the lake, garden, and surrounding landscape. The owner provides optional home-cooked meals, which must be pre-ordered, and complimentary firewood is supplied for the first night.
The property boasts two fishing dams: Lake Heron (2 hectares) and Lake Troy (3 hectares), separated by 500 meters with the old farmhouse and cottages between them. Both dams operate on a catch-and-release basis and are stocked with rainbow and brown trout. Fishing is restricted to fly tackle with barbless hooks, and while a small rowing boat is available, guests must bring their own equipment.
The farm is fully game-fenced and home to various wildlife species including Eland, Black Wildebeest, Fallow Deer, Mountain Reedbuck, Blesbuck, Duikers, and Bush Pig, which are often visible near the dams during early mornings. Additional facilities include a clay pigeon shooting range suitable for both novice and experienced shooters, and a clubhouse that can accommodate 120 people for weddings and functions. Limited hunting opportunities are available during the winter season.
The property is pet-friendly, subject to owner approval, and features three resident dogs: a German Short Haired Pointer, Wired Haired English Terrier, and Yorkie. Weekend stays do not include service as no staff reside on the farm.
