The river naturally attracts fish-eating birds such as the majestic fish eagle, osprey, fishing owl, and kingfisher. The entire area is home to an amazing wealth of birdlife, including serving as an important breeding ground for rare bird species and the Blue Crane, South Africa's national bird. Walks along the river bank and through the fynbos are popular activities in the area. The ocean is situated just two kilometers away, and boats can be hired to observe the estuarine birds on the various mud flats and sand banks.
