Magoebaskloof Birders' Cottages represents premier birding accommodation situated on Dragonwyck Farm in the Magoebaskloof Valley, near Haenertsburg, between Polokwane and Tzaneen on the R71. The property lies on the edge of the Limpopo Drakensberg escarpment, in an area historically composed of grassland with acacia and kiaat trees, now transformed into a mixture of indigenous forest patches and agricultural plantations.
The establishment offers three self-catering cottages: Robin Cottage (two bedrooms), and Narina and Trogon Cottages (one bedroom each). All cottages are equipped with WiFi and complete self-catering facilities. Each cottage is surrounded by indigenous plants, creating an ideal habitat for local birds and wildlife. The accommodations feature both indoor and outdoor amenities, including private baths, showers, and braai facilities. Hot water is supplied through electric geysers with wood-burning donkey systems as backup.
The property is accessed via a 2km dirt road with some steep concrete sections. While regular sedan cars can manage the road, heavily loaded vehicles or those pulling trailers may face challenges on steeper portions. The road does not require four-wheel drive capability.
Dragonwyck Farm operates as a working agricultural enterprise, producing avocados and indigenous plants. Guests can explore the property through various walking trails that follow streams and provide access to escarpment forest. The location is strategically positioned near some of Limpopo Province's premier birding areas, including the Woodbush Forest Reserve. The climate is moderate, positioned between the warm lowveld and cool Haenertsburg highveld.
The establishment maintains a no-smoking policy inside the cottages, and pets are not permitted. While the cottages are not serviced daily, they provide all essential amenities for a comfortable stay, including linens and towels. The proximity to excellent bushveld birding on the rain shadow route, just 15km away, makes it an ideal destination for bird enthusiasts.
