Melkhout Guest Farm is a charming retreat situated between Bonnievale and Swellendam just off the R60 in South Africa, nestled between the tranquil Breede River and the breathtaking Langeberg mountains. The property operates as a working dairy farm, offering guests the unique opportunity to experience authentic farm life, including witnessing daily milking operations and the playful activities of Jersey calves.
The accommodation options include two self-catering cottages: the Farm Cottage and the River Cottage. The Farm Cottage, framed by two historic Pepper trees, accommodates six guests and provides a secure environment for families with toddlers. The River Cottage houses four guests and features a wooden deck with an old wood-fired Dover stove and braai area, overlooking both the river and mountains. Both cottages are equipped with modern amenities including Wi-Fi, fully-fitted kitchens with dishwashers and washing machines.
Five campsites are available, positioned among tall Eucalyptus trees with views of the Langeberg mountains and Breede River. Each site features a raised wooden deck, private bathroom with shower facilities, kitchen sink, and covered area for relaxation or tent placement. The sites include designated fire pits for traditional South African braais and offer Wi-Fi connectivity.
Guests can engage in numerous activities including kayaking (with complimentary equipment available), swimming, fishing, bird watching, and farm walks. The Boathouse provides kayaks, oars, and life jackets for guest use, and firewood is available for purchase.
The property has gained recognition for its tranquil environment and excellent facilities, particularly appealing to nature enthusiasts and those seeking a peaceful retreat from urban life. The farm combines modern comfort with rustic charm, offering a unique blend of agricultural authenticity and leisure amenities.
During power outages, the Farm Cottage maintains electricity during milking hours, and portable rechargeable lighting is provided in all cottages. The farm is accessible via a 2km gravel road from either the R60 or Stormsvlei.
