Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Eswatini's Ezulwini Valley (Valley of Heaven), is the country's pioneer conservation area and most popular eco-destination. Established in 1961, the sanctuary derives its name 'Mlilwane' (Little Fire in siSwati) from frequent lightning strikes on Mlilwane Hill, and symbolizes the spark that initiated Eswatini's conservation movement.
The 4,560-hectare sanctuary features diverse habitats spanning from highveld to lowveld, with an altitude range of 660m to 1437m above sea level. The southern section consists mainly of open grassland savanna plains extending to Nyonyane Mountain, while the northern section comprises highveld grassland with ravine forests and rocky outcrops.
The sanctuary supports a wide variety of wildlife including zebra, blue wildebeest, kudu, nyala, impala, and various smaller mammals. Though rarely seen, leopards also inhabit the area. The sanctuary boasts rich birdlife, with species ranging from montane birds to aquatic species and forest-dwelling varieties.
Accommodation options at Mlilwane Rest Camp include traditional beehive huts, self-catering rondavels, family cottages, and camping facilities. The property features the Hippo Haunt Restaurant overlooking a bird pool, a swimming pool, conference facilities, and various recreational areas. Additional accommodation is available at Sondzela Backpackers and Reilly's Rock Hilltop Lodge.
Activities include game drives, mountain biking, horse riding, guided walks, and self-guided hiking trails. The sanctuary also offers cultural experiences through village walks and visits to the neighboring Chief's Village. Environmental education programs are available through the Interpretation Centre, making it an ideal destination for both tourism and educational purposes.
The sanctuary is accessible year-round and provides an excellent base for exploring the tourist hubs of Ezulwini and Malkerns. Conservation efforts continue to maintain and improve the sanctuary's biodiversity, making it a testament to successful environmental rehabilitation.
