Morning Glory Cottages is a historic guest house establishment situated on Gelykfontein Farm near Venterstad in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The property, which has been in the Van der Walt family since 1884, is renowned for its thoroughbred horse stud established in 1935 and is currently operated by the fifth generation of the family.
Located adjacent to the Gariep Dam (also known as Xhariep Dam), South Africa's largest inland water mass, the guest house occupies a strategic position approximately 600km from Johannesburg, 800km from Cape Town, and 400km from Port Elizabeth. The property is accessible via a 41km drive southeast from the N1 on the R58 towards Port Elizabeth.
The accommodation consists of one self-catering cottage and four en-suite garden rooms, each with private entrances. While the establishment no longer operates a dining room, it offers convenient meal baskets for in-room dining. The property has a rich history, having evolved from a nursery that once maintained 3,000 rose bushes, to its current status as a guest house established in 1996.
Beyond accommodation, the working farm features Rubicon Merino sheep, indigenous goats, game, Nguni cattle, and indigenous Venda chickens. The property produces and sells Nguni products including ottomans, handbags, waistcoats, cushions, and hides when available.
Guests can enjoy various activities including nature walks, bird watching, informal mountain biking, and seasonal hunting. The property's proximity to the Gariep Dam allows for additional activities such as kayaking and air gliding. Notable nearby attractions include the Orange Fish Tunnel, Oviston Nature Reserve, and various historical landmarks.
Morning Glory Cottages has received recognition for its quality service, including being a finalist in the A.A. Accommodation Awards and earning a Certificate of Excellence in 2016. The establishment continues to offer traditional Karoo hospitality while maintaining its heritage as a working farm.
