Mount Etjo Safari Lodge is situated in the heart of the Okonjati Game Reserve, one of Namibia's first private game reserves, founded by renowned conservationist Jan Oelofse. The lodge, whose name means "place of refuge," is historically significant as the site where the Mount Etjo Declaration was signed in 1989, marking a crucial step toward Namibian independence.
The reserve is home to over 8,000 animals and an impressive variety of bird species, making it a true conservation area. The lodge offers various accommodation options, including family rooms, king-size rooms, suites, a villa, and wheelchair-accessible rooms. All rooms feature a unique architectural style that blends luxury with African aesthetics.
The lodge provides numerous activities for guests, including game drives, lion feeding experiences, rhino tracking, and visits to dinosaur footprints discovered by German archaeologists in the 1920s. Additional activities include bird watching, photography from ground-level hides, and educational visits to the Mount Etjo Private School, established by the Oelofse family in 1993.
The facility maintains a strong commitment to conservation, demonstrated by their recent relocation of 26 elephants to Cuatir, Angola, in response to severe drought conditions. This complex operation involved extensive planning and collaboration with wildlife veterinarians and government officials. The lodge has never experienced a poaching incident, thanks to their dedicated wildlife protection unit.
Lodge amenities include a swimming pool, Wi-Fi in communal areas, laundry service, conference facilities, and buffet-style dining. The establishment also offers special venue arrangements for weddings and celebrations, while maintaining its focus on wildlife conservation and education through various programs and initiatives.
