Muchenje Safari Lodge is an independently owned establishment situated on an escarpment in the western region of Botswana's Chobe National Park. Located within the Chobe Forest Reserve, the lodge offers spectacular views of the Chobe River and seasonal flood plains, while maintaining a peaceful distance from the busier Kasane area. The property lies just two hours from Victoria Falls.
The lodge features 12 luxurious thatched private cottages, each offering unique views of the Chobe River and its wildlife. With no fences between the Western Chobe Park Boundary and the Lodge, animals roam freely throughout the area, which is renowned for its abundant wildlife concentrations.
Founded in 1996 and officially opened by then Vice President Festus Mogae, the lodge continues to be actively managed by original founders Shaun Metcalfe and Ted Makgekgenene. The establishment prides itself on delivering personalized service and maintaining a homely atmosphere, supported by experienced managers and guides.
Activities include morning, afternoon, and full-day game drives in open 4X4s, offering opportunities to observe elephants, buffalo, giraffe, and various predators including lions, leopards, and wild dogs. The area is also recognized as one of Africa's premier birdwatching locations. Additional experiences include night drives, river cruises, walking safaris, and cultural village tours.
Muchenje Safari Lodge maintains a strong commitment to community development through its long-standing support of the nearby Mabele Primary School and Kachikau Special Unit School. The lodge participates in the "Pack for Purpose" initiative, facilitating donations of educational supplies to local schools.
Various flexible itineraries are available, ranging from two to four nights, with activities tailored to guest preferences. Options include game drives, boat cruises, walking safaris, cultural visits, and mokoro (canoe) excursions. Guests can choose their preferred activities or opt to relax at the lodge, with no pressure to participate in all offerings.
