Nkonkoni Fishing Camp

Nkonkoni Fishing Camp is strategically located within the Pongola Game Reserve in the Pongolapoort Biosphere of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Situated near the southern shores of the Pongolapoort (Jozini) Dam in the reserve's bird sanctuary area, the camp offers spectacular views of the western escarpment of the Lebombo Mountains and the vast savannah woodland of northern Zululand.

The facility is renowned for its proximity to the Pongolapoort Dam, often referred to as a mini-Kariba, which spans approximately 16,000 hectares with a 5km river stretch. The dam hosts an abundance of wildlife, including elephants, buffalo, rhino, leopard, giraffe, and various antelope species, alongside hippos and crocodiles. It is particularly famous for its tiger fish population, with specimens ranging from under a kilo to record catches of 8.3kg, documented in 1998.

The accommodation options include both chalets and safari tents. The chalets are fully equipped, air-conditioned units with various configurations. The standard four-sleeper chalets feature single beds, outside kitchens, and verandahs, while a special five-sleeper unit offers two bedrooms. Each chalet includes private bathroom facilities with outdoor showers. The safari tents can accommodate up to seven people and are equipped with basic amenities including fans and refrigeration.

All accommodations have access to communal facilities including a swimming pool and boma areas with television access. The camp promotes sustainable fishing practices through a catch-and-release policy, with boat launches available just 1km from the camp. Visitors can expect to encounter various wildlife species during their stay, including warthog, nyala, zebra, wildebeest, kudu, and impala.

The camp operates with specific check-in and check-out times, and its proximity to Mkuze town (11km away) provides convenient access to additional provisions and supplies. The establishment has established itself as a premier destination for both fishing enthusiasts and families seeking a wilderness experience in the heart of Zululand.
