Omapaha Etosha Restcamp is situated on Farm Vierling in the Kunene Region of Namibia, offering visitors an authentic cultural experience alongside comfortable accommodation options. The facility is intrinsically linked with Otjikandero Himba Village, with both locations working collaboratively to preserve and sustain the Ovahimba culture.
The establishment originated when some members of the Otjikandero Village relocated to Farm Vierling due to severe drought conditions, assisted by farmer Mr. Jakkie Robberts. The village currently supports 15 orphaned children, with tourism revenue directly contributing to their care and the wellbeing of their caretaker families.
The accommodation comprises self-catering huts furnished with double beds, cupboards, and basic amenities including bedding, towels, cold water facilities, and tea/coffee stations. Campsites feature cement tent rings, private shading sheds, and basic washing facilities. Both options share communal ablution facilities with three toilets and open-air showers, as well as access to a lapa and swimming pool. The facility operates without electricity, though braai facilities are available throughout.
Importantly, Omapaha emphasizes that it is not a tourist attraction but rather a cultural exchange opportunity. The facility maintains strict policies against unauthorized gifts and western paraphernalia to preserve the authentic lifestyle of the Himba people. Any contributions for the children must be coordinated through official channels such as the guide or village leadership.
Located at coordinates 19.25171 S, 15.39101 E, the restcamp serves as a gateway for visitors to learn about the nomadic Himba culture while ensuring its preservation for future generations.
