Ons Kontrei Gastehuis, formerly a tiny house on Graaff Reinett Road, was the first guest house in Uitenhage. It has been restored with utmost care. In the past, the owners received the Simon van der Stel Foundation award for the restoration of various properties in the Edwardian and Gregorian style, showcasing their love for the old and characteristic.
While some building structures have been changed to incorporate slightly more modern features for guest comfort, the historic and homely interior of the older units has remained unchanged. The more recently built units are modern with one or two antique pieces displayed.
Currently, Ons Kontrei Gastehuis has expanded to nine fully equipped self-catering units, most with their own braai facility, and 12 en-suite rooms with television, DSTV, coffee/tea station, and mini fridges. Most rooms also have a working surface for the traveling corporate guest. Secure parking is available on the premises, and security patrol is provided over weekends.
The guesthouse offers a lovely breakfast served in their cozy dining room, as well as lunch packs and dinner prepared by their catering kitchen, "Amper-Karoo". A new addition to the premises is a large function venue that can accommodate up to 70 guests and is available for booking events. The central location of the guesthouse allows guests to walk to various food outlets in the area.
