Outeniqua Mountain Lodge is a tranquil retreat located along the historic Prince Alfred's Pass, 55km from Knysna and Plettenberg Bay in South Africa. The property sits within a natural corridor featuring unique flora, fauna, and exceptional birdlife, with ancient rock art dating back over 6,000 years in the vicinity.
The accommodation consists of four self-catering log cabins, each sleeping up to six people. Two lodges are positioned on the mountainside offering spectacular sunset views, while two face a peaceful dam. Each cabin features a main en-suite bedroom, a second bedroom, two bathrooms, and a lounge area with a ceramic fireplace. The property also includes Camp Gwaai, comprising four spacious Indian teepee tents in a pecan tree forest, each equipped with four beds and private bathroom facilities.
A historic building from 1860, known as Bain's Retreat, offers an open-plan living space with a large fireplace, complete bathroom facilities, and a well-equipped kitchen. It sits 50 meters from the Kwaai River and features an outdoor fire pit.
The lodge operates independently from the national power grid, generating its own electricity through hydro and solar power. It practices sustainable tourism and organic farming, primarily focusing on pecan nut production. The property is divided into separate farming and lodge areas, ensuring a secure and peaceful environment for guests.
Activities available include fly-fishing for rainbow and brown trout, hiking along the Kwaai River, mountain biking, and nature walks. The location notably has no television, telephone, or mobile reception, offering a genuine escape from modern life. Therapeutic massage services are available by pre-booking, and the venue can accommodate small conferences and group functions for up to 20 people. The facility operates in English, German, and Afrikaans, though pets are not permitted.
