Dundee is situated in the heart of the KwaZulu-Natal battlefields district, where the first shots of the Anglo-Boer War were fired on the town at the Battle of Talana. The town features an excellent historical museum, as does Rorke's Drift. Dundee offers various recreational activities, including an 18-hole golf course, squash, tennis, bowls, and fishing. For adventurous individuals, the nearby Buffalo River offers white water rafting and canoeing opportunities. There is also a 4x4 trail for off-road enthusiasts. Approximately an hour and a half away is the Ithala Game Reserve, which features an abundance of birdlife and four of the big five animal species.
