Penwarn Farm Lodge is an exceptional accommodation establishment nestled in the foothills of the Southern Drakensberg, situated 25 kilometers from Underberg, South Africa. The property spans over 3,400 hectares and has been managed by five generations of the Nicholson family, who maintain active farming operations including cattle, sheep, maize, and potato cultivation.
The lodge features six self-catering cottages, each offering unique accommodation configurations. The flagship Mthini Lodge accommodates ten guests, while Penwarn Manor can host up to sixteen people. Other options include the intimate Kingfisher Cottage for two guests, and various medium-sized units like Mziki, Nguni, and Oribi cottages, which cater to groups of five to eight people. All accommodations feature modern amenities including fireplaces, fully equipped kitchens, and comfortable living spaces.
The property is renowned for its natural beauty, situated in an exquisite valley surrounded by lakes and bordering the historic Highlands Farm, established in 1886. Wildlife enthusiasts can observe zebras, hartebeest, and blesbok in their natural habitat, while bird watchers can spot various species, including cranes and wild geese, from the comfort of their accommodation.
Under new management, the lodge has received excellent reviews for its warm hospitality, spotless facilities, and recent renovations that blend modern comfort with traditional country stone architecture. The venue is particularly popular for weddings, featuring its own chapel overlooking the Drakensberg and a lake, alongside the famous Penwarn Bar. Activities available include cycling, canoeing, and horse riding.
Visitors should note that the property is accessed via 16 kilometers of gravel road, and while free WiFi is available at reception, cellular reception is limited, though a signal booster is provided at the main building.
