Phillipskop Mountain Reserve is a nature destination situated on the fynbos-covered slopes of the Klein River Mountains near Stanford, Western Cape, approximately 30 minutes from Hermanus. The reserve is notable for housing Phillipskop Cave, the only recorded rock art heritage site on the Cape Whale Coast.
The accommodation consists of five spacious self-catering chalets: Erica, Lobelia, Oxalis, Protea, and Restio Cottages. Each chalet features three bedrooms accommodating up to seven guests, with a main bedroom containing a double bed and en-suite bathroom, plus two twin bedrooms sharing a second bathroom. The chalets offer open-plan living areas, fully equipped kitchens, eight-seater dining tables, comfortable lounges with fireplaces, and balconies providing panoramic views of the Overberg towards the Akkedisberg. Mountain-side braai facilities and on-site parking are provided for each unit.
The reserve offers various activities and attractions for visitors, including hiking trails, a waterfall, distinctive rock formations, and natural areas for children to explore. The location provides easy access to local attractions such as the Klein River Cheese Factory, vineyards, breweries, and whale-watching opportunities in Hermanus and De Kelders. A children's jungle gym is situated near the cottages, and the natural environment provides ample opportunities for family-friendly outdoor activities.
Conservation efforts are prioritized at the reserve, with recent changes implemented to manage access more efficiently and enhance visitor experience. The reserve maintains a strong focus on preserving its unique fynbos flora and fauna, including over 100 species of Erica in the Klein River Mountains and twelve species of indigenous frogs.
