Phirima Game Ranch
Phirima Game Ranch is an unspoiled sanctuary situated in the heart of Botswana's Kalahari Desert. The name "Phirima," meaning "the place where the sun sets" in Tswana, perfectly captures the spectacular sunsets that characterize this region. Located approximately 30 kilometers from the southern boundary of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and 80 kilometers south of Mmabuasehube National Park, the ranch spans 16,500 hectares.
The property features diverse landscapes, including sandy dunes offering 360-degree views, grassy areas, pans, and densely wooded sections dominated by Camel Thorn trees. Operating entirely on solar and gas power, the ranch provides various accommodation options, including camping facilities, self-catering homes, and spaces for 4x4 rooftop vehicles, many overlooking watering holes. Potable borehole water is available throughout the property.
Established through the merger of two farms in 2001-2002, Phirima is a registered game farm with the Botswana Department of Wildlife and a member of the Botswana Wildlife Producers Association. The ranch hosts an impressive array of wildlife, including indigenous species such as wild buck, ostriches, brown hyenas, jackals, baboons, and honey badgers. Additionally, introduced species include white rhinoceros, giraffe, impala, waterbuck, zebra, and warthog. Occasional sightings of free-roaming lions, leopards, and cheetahs have been recorded.
While hunting is the primary activity, the ranch also promotes game viewing, particularly during the off-hunting season. The property boasts rich birdlife, with January and February notably known for increased raptor activity. The ranch maintains well-equipped facilities, including a butchery with cold storage rooms, and provides vehicles for both hunting and game viewing activities, operated by trained personnel.
