The 'Red Wine Lovers' Tour provides an opportunity to discover the wines and wineries that have contributed to the distinct heritage of the South African wine industry, celebrated for full-bodied, top-quality wines. The tour starts at Meerlust Estate, a South African classic that has long been recognized for producing world-class wines and has been the pride of the Myburgh family since 1756. Visitors will have the chance to taste one of Meerlust's most renowned wines, the Rubicon, which recently received a score of 92 from the famous wine critic Robert Parker.
The tour then moves on to Kanonkop, situated on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch. Kanonkop, meaning 'where the big guns roar', confidently boasts some of South Africa's most distinguished red wines. The Kanonkop Pinotage was one of The Platter's Guide's wines of the year in 2015 and continues to be a celebrated example of South African winemaking.
The next stop is Muratie, a place with rich heritage and unsurpassed character. The tasting room is built into an old, disused cellar and adorned with cobwebs and paintings of the previous owner's mistress, adding to its unique character.
The final stop of the tour is Rust en Vrede, which was the first farm to specialize in the exclusive production of red wine only and is another well-respected red wine estate in South Africa. Rust en Vrede was chosen to be served at the Nobel Peace Prize dinner by President Nelson Mandela, and it was the first South African red wine listed in the Top 100 Wines of the World, an achievement it repeated for four consecutive years.
