Rogge Cloof Private Nature Reserve, established in 1756 by Joachim Scholtz, is a registered Biosphere Reserve situated at an altitude of 1400 to 1700 metres. The property combines historical significance with modern conservation efforts, featuring free-roaming game including cheetahs and various African wildlife species.
The reserve's Eco-Village, located 12 kilometers from the main entrance, is accessible via a well-maintained gravel road suitable for standard vehicles. Operating on solar power, the facility provides essential charging capabilities for electronic devices while maintaining an eco-friendly approach that excludes high-power appliances. Complimentary uncapped Wi-Fi is available throughout, though television services are not provided.
Accommodation options include both inclusive packages and self-catering units, with amenities such as bathroom essentials, refreshments, and cozy features like fireplaces and hot water bottles for Sutherland's cold winters. Daily housekeeping services are provided except for Sundays. The property also offers dormitory-style accommodation with bunk beds and self-catering facilities, ideal for youth camps and group events.
The reserve boasts diverse wildlife including springbok, gemsbok, black wildebeest, fallow deer, grey rheebok, and zebra. Visitors can experience guided game drives or opt for self-drive wildlife viewing. Additional activities include cheetah tracking and wine tasting. The facility also features a Karoo Wedding Venue with full catering services, providing an authentic Karoo experience for special occasions.
As a dark sky reserve, Rogge Cloof offers exceptional stargazing opportunities, living up to its reputation as home to "the greatest heavens on earth." The reserve provides a tranquil environment for families and couples to create lasting memories while enjoying the natural beauty of the Karoo landscape.
