Simbavati River Lodge is an intimate safari destination nestled on the banks of the Nhlaralumi River within the prestigious Timbavati Private Nature Reserve. The lodge's name, derived from Shangaan language, means "the place where the lions come down from the stars." Shaded by ancient jackalberry and leadwood trees, the 4-star establishment offers a contemporary yet warm atmosphere.
The property encompasses eight luxury safari tents and three family chalets, all featuring private settings with en-suite facilities. The two tented pool suites include solar-heated plunge pools, while the remaining six tented suites offer either river or bush views. All accommodations are equipped with eco-friendly air-conditioning and comprehensive amenities.
Located in the northern sector of the reserve, the lodge is surrounded by over 12,000 hectares of wilderness. The main areas include a spacious lounge, bar, boma, and extensive decks overlooking the river valley. Additional facilities comprise a plunge pool, children's activity area, and a secluded spa retreat offering traditional African massages.
The dining experience combines African and Western cuisine, with meals served on the wooden deck or in the open-air boma. The lodge maintains a fully-licensed bar featuring an extensive selection of South African wines. Daily activities begin with early morning refreshments, followed by brunch after the morning game drive, and high tea preceding the afternoon safari.
Game drives are conducted twice daily by experienced rangers and Shangaan trackers in open 4X4 vehicles. The reserve is home to the Big 5 and numerous other species, including the rare white lion. With over 360 recorded bird species, the area offers exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities.
The Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, established in 1956, maintains a strong commitment to conservation and biodiversity research. The lodge welcomes children of all ages, with those six and older permitted on game drives. Families can also arrange private game viewing vehicles subject to availability.
The establishment provides a relaxed, unpretentious safari experience where guests can enjoy the in-house library, take afternoon siestas, or purchase African mementoes from the curio shop. The combination of excellent game viewing, comfortable accommodation, and attentive service creates an authentic African wilderness experience.
