The Tankwa Lodge is located in Calvinia, which was established in 1851 on the Oorlogskloof River and named after the religious reformer Johan Calvin. Calvinia lies at the foot of the Hantam Mountains, with "Hantam" being a Khoi word that translates to "where the red bulbs grow." The town serves as the region's key growth point and is one of the country's largest wool-producing areas.

The Tankwa Lodge offers accommodation in 25 comfortable rooms, all equipped with en-suite showers and bathrooms. Seven of the rooms are air-conditioned, while the remaining 18 rooms have fans.
