Thabaphaswa Mountain Sanctuary is located in a natural basin, sheltered by enclosing hills, where the wonderful bushveld landscape is reminiscent of the Matopo Hills. It offers a network of hiking, mountain biking, and 4x4 trails, providing opportunities for nature lovers to explore the area's diverse game, bird, and plant life. Rock climbing and abseiling are popular activities.

The sanctuary features a variety of unique bush camps, shaded campsites, a self-contained cottage, and a self-contained cot-house suitable for honeymoon or romantic couples. These accommodations are equipped with ablution facilities, braai areas, pots, pans, solar lamps, and other essentials. Visitors can cool off in the clear water farm dams, jump from boulders into refreshing mountain spring water, or experience the true South African 'foefie' slide.

The sanctuary offers 4x4 routes into the mountains, allowing visitors to experience the "bushveld in the mountains" and observe wild animals. The Pump House is a romantic self-contained cottage. Children can spend time in nature, away from television and cell phones, and have the opportunity to learn about the sanctuary's operational Nguni cattle farm and assist with herding.

With seven dams for swimming and two 'foefieslaaids', as well as fishing opportunities, Thabaphaswa Mountain Sanctuary has experienced an increasing demand for its campsites, as people seek to enjoy the sounds of nature and an "in-the-bush atmosphere". Currently, there are 21 shaded campsites in the wild, each accommodating two or more vehicles with trailers or tents.

Due to its location at the fork of the N1 and N11 highways, the sanctuary is frequently visited by travelers to and from the Kruger National Park and countries to the north.
