The Barracks is an AA Superior, full service guest house situated in a quiet area of Colesberg. It was originally built in 1851 and substantially renovated in 2004. The property was used as barracks during the Anglo-Boer War, hence its name. The original building, now serving as a family unit, was soon augmented by the main house to accommodate the large family of the owner, David Arnot, who was a prolific breeder of children.

The guest house offers comfortable and spacious double rooms, each with private access, an en-suite bathroom featuring a bath and separate shower, and a private patio. All rooms are fully air-conditioned to ensure a comfortable stay regardless of the season. They are equipped with TVs providing access to M-Net or any other channel from the DStv bouquet. Additionally, there is a large family unit with its own private courtyard shaded by a large oak tree and grape vines, suitable for guests traveling with dogs. A further unit, ideal for pets, has a self-catering option.

Secure off-street parking is available, but limited. Therefore, guests towing trailers, boats, caravans, etc. should inform the guest house at the time of booking to make necessary arrangements. The dining room is open for breakfast and dinner. Breakfast, served from 7:00 am, offers a choice of continental or full English or both, and is included in the rate. Dinner is available at an extra cost. While Karoo Lamb is a popular choice, the guest house can arrange for any dish desired, provided the ingredients are available. Special dietary requirements are also catered for, and guests should advise their needs at the time of booking. The guest house is fully licensed, and the pub offers a collection of over 150 SA brandies, as well as a fair selection of malt whiskeys, wines, and beers.

Each room is equipped with a large selection of up-to-date magazines and folders containing information about the history of Colesberg and its involvement in the Anglo-Boer War. The guest house is known as "The Barracks - The reason for the N1," offering a queen-size bed and an en-suite bathroom with a shower and bath. However, this unit is not pet-friendly. Wi-Fi is available on the premises.
