The Bethesda Guesthouse, located in Nieu-Bethesda, Eastern Cape, South Africa, was established in February 2019 when Ludolf and Carla Smit relocated from Johannesburg to pursue their countryside dream. The 4000m² property underwent extensive renovations before opening as a luxury guesthouse and pizzeria.
The owners now maintain a productive garden, manage their hospitality business, and have embraced the vibrant village life. Despite its rural setting, Nieu-Bethesda hosts numerous events throughout the year, including impromptu band performances, wine tastings, art exhibitions, mountain bike races, classical soirees, and various festivals such as the annual Pumpkin Festival, Boere Rally motorcycle ride, and Garlic Festival.
The guesthouse features an expansive stoep (verandah) overlooking a formal rose garden. The interior boasts natural wooden floors, high ceilings, and large windows, creating a space that remains cool in summer and warm in winter. Each room is individually decorated in Karoo chic style with custom-designed furniture and opens onto the garden. All rooms feature en-suite bathrooms with both shower and bath facilities, extra-length king-size beds, and high-quality amenities.
The property offers a comprehensive hospitality experience including full English breakfast, housekeeping service, and modern conveniences such as Wi-Fi. Additional facilities include a large garden with a swim dam, and Bruno's at The Bethesda, an on-site restaurant operating during peak periods. The establishment maintains high standards of comfort with attention to detail in all aspects of guest services, delivered with warm Karoo hospitality.
The guesthouse is accessible via two routes from the N9, with the nearest airport being Port Elizabeth International, approximately 300 kilometers away. Visitors should note that Nieu-Bethesda has no fuel station, ATMs, or banks, requiring advance preparation for their stay.
