The George Hotel

Built on the site of the British Residential Commissioner, Sir Charles Saunders's residency, the hotel was originally known as Tavernors and then The Provincial Hotel. The land was acquired in 1896, and the present hotel was constructed in 1906 adjacent to the Great 300-hectare Dlinza Forest. During the mining boom of the 1920s, the hotel operated as a Stock Exchange for four months. It has witnessed significant historical events, including the Bambata Rebellion, Union, and the Apartheid era, and is now part of the changing new South Africa.
