A person named Walter McFarlane built The Marine Hotel in Hermanus in 1902 after moving from nearby Elgin in the 1880s. The hotel initially had a modest 21 rooms, but it underwent numerous extensions and changes of ownership over the years. In the early 1980s, David Rawdon purchased The Marine Hotel and carried out four years of painstaking renovation, followed by thirteen years of successful management.

However, a new owner was needed to take the historic hotel into the new millennium. Liz McGrath became the new owner of The Marine Hotel in March 1998, initiating a complete makeover of the property. Like The Collection's sister properties, The Cellars-Hohenort and The Plettenberg, The Marine Hotel underwent a transformation to achieve world-class quality, characterized by exceptional design and standards of style, elegance, and comfort in both the bedrooms and public areas.

After a nine-month restoration period, The Marine reopened in October 1998 as a 5-Star hotel. The hotel now offers 40 individually decorated bedrooms and suites, each with private facilities. The rooms command views across Walker Bay, the beautifully manicured gardens, and The Overberg Mountains. The standard twin and double bedrooms feature the same exceptional decor as the suites and luxury doubles, with some offering partial sea views, balconies of varying sizes, or communal balconies overlooking the pool area or courtyard.
