The Travelling Tortoise is an off-the-grid eco-resort situated just outside of De Rust, overlooking the Middleplaas Valley. It comprises six mountain chalets set in a beautiful environment with exceptional views. The chalets are equipped with fully furnished kitchens, family-sized lounges, and large decks with braai facilities. The property offers guests two swimming pools, one of which is solar-heated. Three of the chalets have private wood-fired hot tubs, and there is secure parking on the premises.

The retreat features a short hiking trail where visitors can observe a diverse range of bird species, including hawks and eagles, as well as tortoises, hares, bucks, and many smaller mammals. The Travelling Tortoise is pet-friendly, mosquito-free, and guarantees no power outages. The area enjoys year-round sunshine, with warm summers and refreshingly cool winters.

De Rust and its surroundings offer various attractions, such as the Meiringspoort pass and waterfall, the Kammanassie Nature Reserve, the Cango Caves, the Cango Wildlife Ranch, and the Little Karoo Wine Route. A new addition to the area is the Adventure Playground and The Silver Hare, which offers a zip line experience.

The Travelling Tortoise also features six forest floor campsites located near the pool. Each campsite has water points, and two have electric points, although power is limited to small appliances due to the off-the-grid nature of the property. The ablution block includes three separate showers and toilets, with an abundance of hot water supplied by a solar geyser and a gas backup during the winter months. There is a shaded area and a large communal braai facility.

The Middleplaas Valley stretches out in front of the property, with the Red Stone Hills to the right and the majestic Swartberg mountains forming the backdrop.
