Transkaroo Adventures is a family-owned tourism enterprise located on a sheep and cattle farm in the Karoo region of South Africa, a property that has been in the family since 1912. The business was established in 1993 by Lindo and Elmarie van der Merwe, who launched the Transkaroo Hiking Trail, a three-day adventure experience showcasing the unique Upper Karoo landscape.
The property is strategically located approximately 750 km from both Johannesburg and Cape Town, situated on the N10 route between Middelburg Eastern Cape and Hanover in the Northern Cape, near Noupoort. The business location in Middelburg serves as a central point, being roughly 100 km from surrounding towns including Graaff-Reinet, Cradock, Steynsburg, Colesberg, Richmond, and Hanover.
The establishment offers various accommodation options, including restored farmhouses for self-catering holidays and overnight stays. The facilities include The Cottage, which accommodates four guests and provides access to activities such as mountain biking, hiking, sheep shearing, and seasonal lamb feeding, complete with a tennis court and swimming pool. Rietpoort, a five-bedroom farmhouse at the mountain's foot, and Wilgerfontein, a four-bedroom off-grid farmhouse, can each accommodate up to 12 guests.
Following Elmarie's passing in 2021 due to Covid, their daughter Marelize and her family relocated from Bloemfontein to continue the family business alongside Lindo. The property currently features a wind farm development, and the new generation of management is working on expanding the offerings to include mountain bike routes and additional accommodation options. The business continues to provide organized hunting experiences and maintains its reputation for offering an authentic Karoo farm experience.
